MINNEAPOLIS (US Bank Stadium) -- The Bemidji State University baseball team opened its 2020 campaign with a walk-off win and a complete-game shutout Friday afternoon against Rockhurst University at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Junior outfielder Austin Weisz knocked in the game-winning run of a 4-3 game one victory before senior pitcher Jake Olson threw a complete game to cap an 8-0 win in game two.

Game One – W, 4-3 The Hawks took an early lead over the Beavers in the season opener with one run in each of the first and third innings. The Beavers answered in the bottom of the third as a triple from senior outfielder Noah Boser set up a sacrifice fly by junior infielder Parker Borg, cutting BSU’s deficit to 2-1. Junior pitcher Jackson Back (1-0) allowed just one hit between the fourth and sixth innings, although the Hawks scored one run in the top of the seventh inning following two doubles.
Junior infielder Blake Huntley led off the bottom half of the seventh inning with a single that was followed with a walk during the next at-bat. A fielding error by RU allowed Huntley to score before the two-out heroics began three batters later. Senior infielder Kade Nelson singled through the right side to bring the tying run home before Weisz recorded the walk-off RBI on a single to right center field that brought Boser in to score.
Back earned the win after throwing a complete game with five strikeouts and five hits allowed while recording two earned runs. Boser went 3-of-4 from the plate for BSU while scoring two runs. Weisz also finished with a multi-hit game and finished with one RBI and one walk.
Game Two – W, 8-0 Both teams remained scoreless through the first three frames before a lead-off single in the top of the fourth inning by senior catcher Isaiah Grancorvitz set up the go-ahead RBI by Weisz three batters later. In the following inning, junior outfielder Wyatt White walked and was brought home on an RBI triple by senior outfielder Noah Boser. Grancorvitz singled during the next at-bat to drive in the runner from third and extend BSU’s lead to 3-0. The Beavers brought in all five of its sixth-inning runs with two outs, including two two-RBI hits by White and junior infielder Sam Kalberer.
Olson (1-0) faced 25 batters in his season debut allowed five hits with no runs and only one extra-base knock. Through the game, Olson left four RU runners stranded on base and didn’t allow a walk. At the plate, Grancorvitz led the Beavers in game two by going 3-of-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Boser went 2-of-3 from the plate with two runs scored, one RBI, one triple and one stolen base. Bemidji State and Rockhurst close out the three-game series with a nine-inning game Saturday, Feb. 22. First pitch of game three of the series will be at 12 p.m. at US Bank Stadium.
